What to include
- Your iPhone model and iOS version. You will find both in Settings → General → About.
- The website, and the page you were on.
- Which switch or switches you have on.
- What happened, and what you expected to happen.
- A screenshot, if you can take one.
BrainGuard collects nothing: no account, no crash reports, no analytics. That means I cannot see your setup or what went wrong on your phone, so the details you send are all I have to work with.
Turn the extension on
- Install BrainGuard from the App Store. It is free and needs iOS 17 or later.
- Open Settings → Safari → Extensions.
- Tap BrainGuard and switch it on.
- Choose your switches. Nothing is on until you switch it on.
Safari also lets you choose which websites an extension may run on. Allow the sites you want BrainGuard to work on. To turn BrainGuard off completely, switch it off in the same place.
What the switches do
Twenty-six switches across six services, each one for a single thing on a single site. Every switch starts off, so nothing is hidden until you switch it on.
Most switches hide something. BrainGuard removes the element and leaves one grey line where it used to be, so you always know the difference between hidden and broken.
Some switches change how a site behaves instead of hiding something. For example:
- LinkedIn — Notification badges. Red counts on the nav.
- X — Media-tab autoplay. Video plays on tap instead.
Every service has its own page with its switches, and a line on what BrainGuard never touches there.
A switch stopped working
Sites redesign, and when they do a switch can stop finding the thing it hides. If that happens, tell me which site and which switch and I will fix it. The details in What to include are all I need.
Common questions
Does it work outside Safari?
BrainGuard is a Safari extension for iPhone, so Safari on iPhone is the only place it works.
Does the extension collect anything?
No. There is no account, no sync, no crash reports and no analytics, and the extension has no network permission, so it cannot send anything anywhere. The App Store label reads Data Not Collected. If you email me for help, I see the address and message you send. The privacy policy has the full detail.
Is it really free?
Yes, it is free on the App Store and there is nothing to sign up for. It is free because it costs almost nothing to run. More about who makes it.
How do I put something back?
